LONG BEACH, Calif. - The outdoor track & field season gets underway this weekend at Jack Rose Track as Long Beach State welcomes a host of schools from across Southern California for the Beach Opener on Saturday. Due to rain on Friday, the meet was condensed to a one-day meet on Saturday, with the action scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

In addition to the host of Long Beach State athletes competing on Saturday, there will also be numerous representatives from USC, along with local junior college programs like Mt. SAC, Long Beach City College, and others.

Among the JUCO competitors this weekend, there are several to keep an eye on. Jett Gordon of Golden West College posted a season-best mark of 17-03.00 in the men's pole vault last season, was the best in the state among junior college competitors in 2017. He would place second at the state championships last year, and the third and fourth place finishers in the event--Asa Martin and Christian Mueller of Mt. SAC--are both scheduled to compete on Saturday as well.

In the triple jump, last year's third-place finisher at the state meet was Mt. SAC's Brandon McLaurin, who will be one of the headliners of that event this weekend. On the women's side, Mt. SAC's Teulia Gardner was the runner-up in the women's 800-meter and will run this weekend.

The action on Saturday begins in the field with men's and women's long jump, men's hammer throw and women's javelin all getting underway at 10 a.m. Action on the track starts at 11:20 a.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
