Vincent Calhoun Punches Ticket to NCAA Outdoor Championships
Junior jumper qualifies with top 12 finish in the men’s high jump
AUSTIN – Long Beach State Junior Vincent Calhoun jumped his way into the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., after finishing in the top 12 at the NCAA West Regional Championships on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
Calhoun punched his ticket to Nationals for the first time in his career after placing 12th in the men’s high jump with a distance of 2.15m (7’ 0.5”). He was the only Big West Conference student-athlete to qualify in the event and just one of three from the West Region.
The junior from La Habra, Calif., is Long Beach State’s top high jumper as he owns a lifetime best mark of 2.20m (7’ 2.5”) which ranks him fourth in the LBSU all-time record book and ninth in the nation.
Calhoun will join teammate Riley Cooks at Nationals after the senior qualified in the heptathlon after winning the Big West Championship with a Long Beach State school record 5,671 points.
In addition to Calhoun, Long Beach State also sent Josh Carr and James Hubbard into action in the men’s discus throw, as well as Jasmine Bass in the women’s triple jump. However, each of the 49ers suffered fouls in their respective events.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place June 7-10.
