Long Beach State closes out action at VS Athletics Beach Invitational

NORWALK, Calif. - Tyler Wallace and Cesar Puga both had individual victories to highlight the annual VS Athletics Beach Invitational, which was hosted by Long Beach State, at Cerritos College on Saturday.

Wallace won the pole vault, clearing a career-high 17-03.75, which ranks him sixth on the 49er all-time charts. Puga, meanwhile, claimed the discus title with the 10th-longest throw in school history at 185-04. Puga added an eighth-place finish in the shot put (53-07.75).

Colin Dunbar also had a lifetime-best performance in the discus as he finished fourth with a toss of 177-05, while Rajan Bains notched a season-long 159-08 to place 16th overall.

Ben Woodruff posted a top-10 finish in the javelin as he took seventh (197-05). Justin Fox had a season-best 22-06.25 in the long jump to finish 16th.

Over on the track, Josh Ruff was third overall in the 5000-meter run with a personal-record 14:52.61. Chris Walden (15:12.51) and Nick Kelley (15:12.53) added season-bests as they were 15th and 16th, respectively.

Koree Hines was LBSU's top finisher in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 14.44 seconds. Nathan Alade registered a personal-record 21.91 seconds in the 200-meter dash, while Christopher Lawson was right on his heels (21.98).

Katrina Graves-Johnson led the 49er women as she tied for second in the high jump, clearing a career-high 5-08.75. That mark also ranks 10th on the 49er all-time charts.

Kayla Kamaka was Long Beach State's top performer in the pole vault, tying for ninth with a height of 11-09.25, while Lynn Patu registered a season-long 139-00 in the discus.

Shakina Phillips paced the sprinters/hurdlers with an eighth-place showing in the 400H, crossing the finish line in a season-best 61.80.

Amber Clark clocked in with a season-low 14.79 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, while Saedra Wright did the same in the 200m dash (25.39).

Michelle Thompson also notched a season-best 18:03.81 in the 5000m.

Long Beach State returns to action next weekend when it heads to La Jolla for the UCSD Triton Invitational, April 22-23.
