49ers Conclude Day One of UCI Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State track & field team kicked off the UCI Spring Break Invitational with three events Friday at Anteater Stadium.
Senior Kylee Martin led the way with a runner-up performance in the women's 3000m steeplechase. She crossed the finish line in a lifetime-best 11:18.22, which also ranks fifth in program history. Freshman Ashley Carrera added a seventh-place showing in the 5000m (17:49.69).
Sophomore Marina Shelton was the 49ers' top finisher in the women's hammer throw as she took second with a toss of 176-10. Junior Fatima Vergara came in third (176-08), while sophomore Chaylene Bruggeman contributed a top-10 showing with a personal-record 164-04. Sophomore Brianna Viltz also notched a personal-best 136-03 to come in 11th.
On the men's side, sophomore Kody Robison and redshirt freshman Robert Marlow (169-08) were third and seventh, respectively, in the hammer throw. Robison registered a lifetime-best 195-08 and now ranks ninth among Long Beach State's all-time top-10.
Senior Andrew Garcia took fourth in the steeplechase, clocking in at 9:36.29. Freshman Emilio Nunez also led a trio of LBSU distance runners in the 5000m as he placed seventh overall with a time of 14:59.17. Junior Tim Bergstrom was right on his heels in eighth, posting a personal-record 14:59.18, and freshman Sam Bautista came in ninth (15:03.88).
Long Beach State will continue its stay in Irvine with the second and final day of the UCI Spring Break Invitational on Saturday. The 49ers will also have a contingent of athletes competing at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., tomorrow.
