Long Beach State Wins High Jump at Ben Brown Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State concluded its appearance at the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton with a pair of event winners, 18 top 10 finishes and numerous personal records achieved.

The Beach won both high jump events as Vincent Calhoun led the men’s squad and Bria Palmer led the women.

Calhoun placed first with a distance of 2.14m (7-00.25) which was a new personal record for the junior transfer. His mark also ranks him sixth all-time at Long Beach State. His mark currently ranks him third in the nation behind a pair of jumpers out of UCLA, making his mark the best in the Big West Conference.

Also finishing in the top 10 among the men’s high jumpers was Jackson Potter. The redshirt freshman notched a new PR for himself with a mark of 1.90m (6-02.75) for a ninth-place finish.

On the women’s side, Palmer won the high jump with a tally of 1.70m (5-07.00) as she narrowly beat out UC Riverside’s Danielle Spargur for the individual event victory.

In addition to Palmer’s success in the women’s high jump, Long Beach State also received a solid effort from Meghan Sweeney as she placed third in the event with a mark of 1.65m (5-05.00).

The Beach women had their best outing in the field as junior Lauren Bartsch turned in a top 10 finish in the pole vault as she place sixth with a height of 3.58m (11-09.00).

Similar to the women, Long Beach State’s men’s squad saw its top performances in the field also on the final day of competition.

The 49er men turned in three top 10 finishes in the pole vault as senior Bo Haddock led the way with a third place finish in the event after notching a mark of 4.88m (16-00.00). His height is good for sixth in the country and is a team-best.

Rounding out Long Beach State’s top 10 finishers in the pole vault were juniors Dustin Wert and Cole Hicks. The duo each recorded a height of 4.58m (15-00.25) to place fifth in the event.

Long Beach State continues the outdoor season on Friday, March 17 at the USC Trojan Invite. The Beach will also see action on Saturday, March 18 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State.
