Long Beach State Starts Off Strong on Day 1 of Ben Brown Invitational
Kevin Ramirez, Robert Marlow lead the way for the Beach
FULLERTON, Calif. – The Long Beach State track and field team continued its strong start as the Beach turned in several solid performances and personal-bests on the first day of the Ben Brown Invitational.
The first day of competition featured the men’s and women’s hammer throws, javelin, 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run. Long Beach State saw its best performances of the day in the hammer throw and 5,000-meter run.
The men’s squad was led by redshirt junior Kevin Ramirez who recorded a new personal-record mark for himself in the 5,000-meter run. Ramirez earned a third-place finish in the event with a time of 14:27.40 which is a Big West qualifying mark for the Santa Fe Springs, Calif., native.
Leading the Beach in the field was senior thrower Robert Marlow who placed second in the hammer throw as he was top collegiate finisher with a heave of 63.73m (209-01.00) which is also a season-best for him. He led Long Beach State in the event which also saw Nicholas Hudson and Josh Carr earn top 10 finishes.
Hudson came in fifth in the hammer with a mark of 57.58m (209-01.00), while Carr turned in a season-best tally of 56.63m (185-09.50) to place eighth.
On the women’s side, junior transfer De’Ondra Young continued her dominance in the field as she launched a new personal-record in the hammer throw of 60.57m (198-08.50) to come in second in the event.
Young was the leader of the Beach quartet that saw Erykah McNairy, Shelby Crider, and Amanda Truong all earn top 15 finishes. McNairy placed 10th with a mark of 47.50m (155-10.00), while Crider came in 13th with a heave of 46.38m (152-01.75), and Truong rounded out the group with a 14th place finish after tallying a mark of 46.19m (151-06.25).
On the track, sophomore Lexi Ceballos earned a top 10 finish in the 5,000-meter run after finishing in 18:10.65. She came in ahead of teammate Pauline Mandel who posted a time of 18:37.19.
Long Beach State will wrap up competition at the Ben Brown Invitational on Saturday, March 11. The field events begin at 8:30 a.m., while the track events start at 6:30 p.m.
