Maldonado claims MPSF indoor mile title in record-breaking time

SEATTLE, Wash. - Matt Maldonado became the first 49er to run a sub-four mile as he won the event to highlight the second and final day of the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships for Long Beach State Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

Maldonado beat his own school record for the third time this season as he clocked in at 3:59.08. He was the first 49er in program history and was just one of two competitors on Saturday to finish in under four minutes. He came close to cracking the four-minute mark two weekends ago at the Husky Classic when he crossed the finish line in 4:00.70.

Koree Hines also broke a nine-year old school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a lifetime-best 8.09 to finish fourth overall. Hines topped the previous best of 8.12, which was established by Shingo Suzumura in 2003.

Jahmani Lockett finished 10th in the 400m (48.81) and Gabriel Hilbert had an 11th-place showing in the 800m with a personal-record 1:52.12. Hilbert moved up two spots to No. 4 on the 49er all-time top 10 list.

In the field events, Jacob Weintraub led the way, taking bronze in the shot put with a toss of 58-03.25.

Michael Vaughan matched his career long in the triple jump with a leap of 48-03.50. He was 12th overall, while Manny Neizer placed 14th (47-09.25).



On the women's side, Jessica Barnard notched a program-record 2:10.40 in the 800m to finish just out of scoring position in ninth place. She bettered her lifetime best by just over three seconds. Kylee Martin also took 26th overall with a personal-record 2:18.64.

Katrina Graves-Johnson was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5-10. She was coming off a record-breaking performance two weekends ago where she registered a height of 5-11.50.

Phylicia Johnson also scored with an eighth-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles (8.57).

Rosa Del Toro finished 18th in the mile run (4:51.19), while Catherine Martinez was 26th with a lifetime-best 5:00.48.

Also notching personal records were Saedra Wright in the 400m (58.17) and Kayla Kamaka in the pole vault (12-04.75). Wright's time ranks eighth in school history, while Kamaka's mark is fourth all-time.

The women's 4x400 relay team of Jasmine Askew, Chelsea Hairanian, Jessica Barnard and Saedra Wright placed 12th overall with the third-best mark in program history (3:50.49).

Long Beach State begins the 2012 outdoor season next weekend when it hosts the Beach Classic, March 2-3, at Cerritos College.
