Long Beach State track and field rewrites school record books at UW Invitational

Senior Rosa Del Toro established a school record in the mile and was also a member of the record-breaking women's DMR squad.

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Long Beach State track and field team established three school records at the UW Invitational, Jan. 27-28, at Dempsey Indoor.

The women's distance medley relay team of Rosa Del Toro, Chelsea Hairanian, Catherine Martinez and Jessica Barnard started things off for LBSU on Friday evening, crossing the finish line in a program-best 11:48.81 to place third overall.

The men's DMR also had a fifth-place showing as the quartet of Matt Maldonado, Bryce Van Boxtel, Connor Naasz and Gabriel Hilbert clocked in at 10:13.53 to rank eighth on the 49er all-time charts.

On Saturday, Rosa Del Toro established a school-record 4:50.75 in the women's mile as she finished 16th. Del Toro topped the previous record of 4:53.57, which was set by Missy Barclay in 2008.

Matt Maldonado also bettered his own school record as he claimed fourth place in the mile with a time of 4:03.39.

In the women's 800m, Jessica Barnard registered a lifetime-best and the sixth-fastest mark in 49er history (2:18.30), while Kylee Martin cracked the top 10 at No. 8 (2:20.67).



In the men's 800m, Gabriel Hilbert placed 24th overall, crossing the finish line in 1 minute, 53.83 seconds. His mark ranks him sixth on the school's all-time list.

Long Beach State will take a week off before returning to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic (Feb. 10-11) and the UW Open Meet (Feb. 12).
