49er Varsity Club About the Club | Background | 49er Alumni | Get Involved | Career Networking | Calendar of Events | Varsity Club News Background There seems to be no early record to authenticate the beginnings of a formal group of former student-athletes. There were some meetings of former athletes during the 1960's. These sessions usually occurred during Homecoming, when former football players came together to relive the glory of their college years. However, a group of alumni came together in 2001 to found the Long Beach State Varsity Club. This club initially focused on funding degree completion scholarships. However, due to extenuating circumstances, the club fell into an inactive state. In 2008, after reviewing the needs and desires of current and former student-athletes, Long Beach State Athletics decided to form the 49er Varsity Network, which mission is Athletes helping athletes. This group is now composed of all former student athletes and has created a sense of community among the generations that are Long Beach State Athletics.
