Long Beach State Joins In Partnership With Northwestern Mutual To Benefit Student-Athletes
Oct. 31, 2013
Long Beach, Calif. - The office of Northwestern Mutual Newport Beach and Long Beach State Athletics recently signed a significant partnership agreement that will specifically support the student-athlete experience at Long Beach State.
The agreement will help support new postgraduate opportunities and programs not only for 49er student-athletes, but for the campus community as well through internship and career opportunities. Northwestern Mutual's internship has ranked in the Top 10 for 16 consecutive years in Vault's Guide to Internships.
The partnership will financially support the continuation of fun, social activities that are offered to student-athletes during the course of an academic year including the annual preseason barbeque, the student-athlete academic luncheon, and the senior awards dinner. Long Beach State will also assist with placement and publicity for Northwestern Mutual's nationally-recognized internship program to provide further career opportunities for students on campus.
"This partnership between Northwestern Mutual and Long Beach State Athletics is a great fit because our values are the same," said Northwestern Mutual Managing Partner Tim Mulroy. "Both of our organizations are passionate about strengthening the communities we live in and developing tomorrow's leaders. And, many of our clients and financial representatives are Long Beach State graduates."
Much of the initial drive for the partnership came from LBSU student-athlete involvement, as several 49ers have found successful careers at Northwestern Mutual, either through interning while earning their degree or securing full-time employment following graduation. Most recently, former track & field star Alex Goldberg has laid his professional foundation in the Newport Beach office.
Athletics Director Vic Cegles added, "It is exciting to partner with Northwestern Mutual in a creative program that will enhance the student-athlete experience and also provide opportunity for all CSULB students to seek internships and professional careers."
Long Beach State has achieved great success over the last few years, winning three consecutive Big West Commissioner's Cups, recognizing the conference's top athletic programs. The 49ers have also balanced that competitive success with academic progress, with every team passing the NCAA's Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards for the past seven years.
The partnership will be a great benefit in the effort to continue these successes while focusing on building the student-athlete both professionally and personally.
