Long Beach, Calif. - The Big West Conference announced the Academic All-Conference awards for the winter and spring seasons, and Long Beach State had 51 student-athletes recognized across 10 sports following the 2016-17 season.
Long Beach State had five honored for Men's and Women's Basketball, the only two winter sports sponsored by the Big West. Roschon Prince was recognized for the men's team, while the women's team had four players honored in Gigi Hascheff, Anna Kim, Martina McCowan and Madison Montgomery.
Four Dirtbags players garnered honors from the Big West champion baseball team. Josh Advocate, Daniel Jackson, Tyler Radcliffe and Lucas Tancas. Softball had three players honored, as Christina Clermont, Tierra Falo and Mattie Scheele met the standard.
Five Beach Volleyball players were recognized. Nele Barber, Anete Brinke, Rachel Nieto, Morea Wagner and Kobi Pekich, the NCAA Elite 90 award winner for the sport at the Beach Volleyball National Championships all earned the honor, as did a trio of golfers. Joe Fryer represented the men's program, while Breann Fox and Felicia Taverrite represented the women's program.
Women's tennis had a trio of honorees in Laura Eales, Julie Gerard, and Maeva Razakasoa. Women's Water Polo also had six players honored in Annabel Harman, Christina Kotsia, Alexandra Massier, Lacey Sedor, Virginia Smith and Jackie Stanger.
Finally, the Long Beach State track and field team once again had a large number of honorees. Luis Briceno, Patrick Burciage, Josh Carr, Xander Cooper, Bo Haddock, James Hubbard, Nicholas Hudson, Robert Marlow, Nash Parker, Paul Thenard, Sullivan Wall and Dustin Wert qualified for the men, while honorees for the women's team were Lauren Bartsch, Ashleigh Chambers, Riley Cooks, Shelby Crider, Lea Fong, Taylor Lorack, Pauline Mandel, Erykah McNairy, Delainey Smith and Charlotte Utash.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big West honors, student-athletes must have completed at least a full year academically at the institution, carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and meet minimum competition requirements.

Fryer Opens Season With Top Three Finish
Joe Fryer opened the season by finishing in a two-way tie for third place out of 68 golfers at the Itani Quality Homes Intercollegiate. He shot a 9-under 204 over three rounds, including a 4-under 67 on the final day of the tournament.
